Avantasia: Lost in space EP parts I & II

28/12/07  ||  Euthanatos

Avantasia is the project of Edguy mainman/vocalist/pretty boy Tobias Sammet. After releasing a two-part metal opera, Sammet put the project on indefinite hiatus and continued pursuing his successful Edguy career.

Now, in 2007, he decides to release two EPs, or one EP in two parts, called “Lost in Space”. This all precedes the new Avantasia album to come in 2008, called “The Scarecrow”.

Yes, I’m actually condensing the two EPs into one review. What’s that? You wanted one individual review for each one? Why don’t you go and sit on a bee hive, faggot.

The first song on the first EP is the title track. It’s interesting, doesn’t sound at all like anything from Edguy or the “Metal Opera”. It has a futuristic and a lot more mellow sound to it, hardly sounding metal at all. It’s poppy-synth with heavy guitars and a catchy chorus.

The second track, and to me the best of both EPs, is a very good and enthusiastic version of ABBA’s classic “Lay All Your Love On Me”. ABBA is quintessential music, vocal melodies ridden with perfection, and I always enjoy metal/rock versions of their songs. The grandiose choir in the chorus only gives it more power.

From then on, the EP gets a lot more “metal’ and, surprisingly, a lot less interesting. “Another Angel Down” is entertaining, with neat keyboards and trumped up vocals, the operatic “The Story Ain’t Over” sounds a bit too melodramatic and Disney-Like for my liking, there’s a shitty intermission, and finally we get to a Lucifer’s Friend cover of “Ride The Sky”. It’s a very good version, I just don’t find the song that appealing.

The second EP continues the “Lost in Space” track of the first EP, so just go up a bit and read that again. We then have “Promised Land”, which should have been interesting because it features two vocal legends, Kiske and Lande, but me, I’m not impressed. Sounds like generic homo erotic german power metal.. and guess what… That’s what it is!

“Dancing with Tears in my Eyes” is probably the gayest song title I have ever heard, it’s an Ultravox cover and I could have lived my whole life without it.

“Scary Eyes”, a bit heavier at parts, gay chorus…Scratch. “In My Defense”, power ballad…pass.

So yeah, basically this is a big waste of time, with probably one good song, just get it on iTunes, or illegally download it, or do whatever suits you. Let’s wait for the full-length and hope for more blatant flamboyant gayness.

The covers: Tobias in a gay pose in the first one, random photoshop in the other. How exquisite. I’m putting up the lesser of two evils, naturally.

3 lay all your loooove oooon meeeee out of 10.
